A heartfelt video on the Moonah Park Aged Care website inspired final-year student Josie Harcourt to pursue an independent music therapy placement with Churches of Christ.

“I was really moved when I learned about Moonah Park’s music-focused church services for residents with dementia,” Josie shared. “I thought, ‘This is an aged care facility already doing incredible things with music… I must be a part of it!’”

During her placement, Josie often witnessed care staff singing with residents in the hallways, an experience that complemented her work facilitating one-on-one music therapy sessions. She also had the chance to play live music for some of the church services. Josie described this experience as a "full-circle moment" where her therapeutic training and the organisation’s faith values intersected.

“From my perspective, Moonah Park’s music-focused church services demonstrate unconditional love and a commitment to making services more accessible to those who can benefit the most. I’m truly grateful to the team at Moonah Park for allowing me to complete my clinical placement on-site and contribute to this culture of dedicated care.”

Josie encouraged staff to continue engaging with residents through singing, both during church services and in their daily interactions.

“Music therapy research shows that singing can foster more relaxed and mutual interactions between care staff and residents. For those with dementia, this may be because singing can sometimes be more neurologically accessible than speaking. I've applied this knowledge during my clinical work on placement, but I hope the wonderful staff at Moonah Park continue to sing and provide musical care even after my placement has ended.”
